S&R (HANDAQ) was set up in 1982 by Mr Saviour Brincat as a joint venture with Mr A H Rieck, of Sonneborn & Reich Ltd, England. It started developing and producing a wide range of products such as paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels and thinners for wood, metal and plastic. Continuous investment has led to the state of the art manufacturing plant and the construction of a large depot for resins and solvents. The depot not only feeds the manufacturing plant but also supplies other chemical industries with various solvents.

The company views its work force as one of the most valuable assets, with emphasis in providing them with regular on-going training and knowledge about the latest technological development in their respective fields.

Excellent results in export helped the company achieve the award for 'The Best Newcomer in Export' issued by the Malta External Trade Corporation for 1998.
